We just watched Diary of the Dead and despite the woeful acting and the fact that I’ve seen it all before a dozen times, it frightened the living poop out of me. I screamed, like, three times. I find I either let myself get totally immersed and scream, or be all standoffish – the immersed version is infinitely more fun (even if my throat is a little sore now). We watched Cloverfield the other night and it worked for me too (better than tonight’s actually) – I didn’t know what it was when I sat down to watch it, I actually thought it was just a regular End Of The World blockbuster thing, little did I know! Oh, and speaking of ‘little did he know’, I loved Stranger Than Fiction, but then I’m just a complete sucker for Will Ferrell no matter what he does.

Tonight I made white pudding – vegan style! oats, pearl barley, minced onion, textured soy protein, seasonings and unfortunately, I had to resort to using the wheat gluten Gord sent me a few months back. I say unfortunately because although it was fun to use it (and the results are fabulous), I can’t become too dependant on it in my cooking – no point having an Irish food blog that tells people to use liquid smoke and vital wheat gluten all the time when you can only get them if you have a mate from across the pond who’s willing to post them to you! Anyway, it turned out delicious, not exactly as firm as pudding, but savoury and moreish and really moist – that’s what got me so excited about it. I’ve made fake pork stuff before, burgers etc. but getting the moistness right is so important, and I totally nailed it tonight. I have a rough recipe for it written up, but I need to test it again because there was a lot of letting stuff sit about while I tried to find the Marmite and helped Benny make a batch of oat milk. The verdict on oat milk? Very tasty as a drink, probably on cereal too, kinda pointless in Irish tea. Potentially excellent in baking though, nicely thick and a kind of gel like texture (= moisture!).

Anyway, I know, why isn’t this all up at the new blog. Have to make a header. Have to make a plan, at least a rough one. Must do it very soon.

Still no sign of the shit brickhouse (the brick oven) yet. It’s status is shipped anyway, but only as of yesterday apparently. Le sigh.

Okay, I’m going to have to go, I’m as jumpy as hell after that movie and I need to go check all the doors are locked, lol…. *eyes dart nervously*

Don’t forget to check the downstairs kitchen window…dun dun dun…or the other windows, too, for that matter! ;)

Hey – I’m here to help and remind ya! :D

Diary of the Dead is excellent! Well, in a cheeseball zombie-flick sort of way. :-D You should check out Land of the Dead, too. George Romero is still the king of the zombies.

I liked Cloverfield for its story conceit. That’s all I’ll say for fear of giving it away.

Man, I still remember my brother and I as teenagers (WAY back in the 80’s … LOL) We watched Evil Dead 1 & 2 back to back. There wasn’t much sleep going on that night. LOL

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Land of the Dead Gord – can you give me a reminder from it that wont spoil the plot (lol!!rotfl) – oh, is it the one in the big complex where the girl is thrown in a pitt with some kind of animal and theirs a mean ol capitalist with whisky in a boardroom?

I have to watch both Evil Deads again. I love them.

The non-deads are surviving in a city on an island with moveable bridges, crews go out in armed and armoured vehicles to forage in the world for supplies. Simon Baker, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper are all in it.

hmmm. sounds very ‘realistic’. i had ‘real’ white pudding this eve and it was scrumdidiluptios. will be interesting to test if the pudding is as ‘realistic’ as your lasagne.

you get the joke, right………! ?

lol, yes I do actually :) For everyone else’s benefit Mraid announced the other night when she was here that my coleslaw (handmade with handmade tofu mayo) was very realistic (as if she were eating some kind of film prop!)- we cracked up.

I do love scary movies. Preferably ones that just leave you scared but not shaken. :D
